Moshup Reflections
Moshup Reflections: August, 2011.
Painted canvas base, old shingles, machine embroidery. Image designs based on photos taken on Moshup Trail, Aquinnah - Martha's Vineyard. Piece made for Gay Head Gallery 508 645 2776
L to R Top to bottom
Osprey (Machine embroidery on fabric) Seascape - threads stitched to organza (mist) Osprey landing at nest.(Machine embroidery)
Daisies (Machine embroidery) Leaf (machine embroidery) Shells
Flower (I need to find out what this is)
Grasses, leaves, bent trees, ground plants, golden finch feathers. All embroidered.
This is different to most of the work I have done with fabric. The shapes come from the shape of the photos I took. I used the shingles as a base but I love the different colours and textures that fit in so well with the Moshup Trail.

"Down the Drain"
"Down the Drain" 24" x 12" Timber, acrylic paint, biscuits (woodwork type, not eating type), dowling, printed cotton.
I made this when Bush was in his last year of 'government'. The media kept calling him a 'lame duck' and Cheney a close second. I had spent a lot of time listening to NPR (Public Radio) and every day there were more and more issues where there were huge problems. So I made many boats that were heading down the drain after 'the lame duck' who was already in the drain. Each boat represents a state or a star on the flag which is also running down the drain. Some of the words on the flags are Employment, Pensions, Prisons, Greed, Recession, Education, Iraq, Waterboarding, Oil, Detainees, Poverty, Loans, Homelessness, Veterans, Mortgages etc. The words were taken from the NPR discussions.

"Jesus Christ would not vote for Barack Obama"
"Jesus Christ Would Not Vote For Barack Obama"
18" x 18'
This title proved to be rather controversial. I made this image of Barack Obama in the lead up to the elections. I felt he was being looked upon as the new Messiah (I admired him too) and so printed his image onto silk and painted the board in gold and printed strips of silk with sayings from his speeches.
The title is from a quote by Barack Obama in "Call to Renewal" Keynote Address, Wednseday, June 28, 2006. Washington DC. obama.senate.gov
(Quote about Senator Obama from Mr Alan Keyes during the 2004 US General Election)
The full quote is: "Jesus Christ would not vote for Barack Obama because Barack Obama has behaved in a way that is inconceivable for Christ to behave".
I took this to a gallery on the island who agreed to take it but after a few days took it off display. I explained the meaning that it was IRONIC but they still did not want it. (I have written in red pen on the back "This is meant to be IRONIC'. So I still have it here propped up against my wall. I did remove the title but I think I will put it back on again.
Some of the quotes:
"We hold common hopes"
We have individual responsibility, but we also have a collective responsibility to each other".
"Society can change"
"We need an injection of morality in our political debate"
"And if we can come together ... we will be building a movement that can lead us one day to the high road of peace and brotherhood".

The Bowlegged Family from Alaska make plans for the future
The Bowlegged Family from Alaska make plans for the future.
8"x8' x2"
Wooden box and bowlegged family from Thrift store. "Sarah Palin's" dress is the Alaskan flag which I printed onto cotton.
I visited Mt Rushmore when I first arrived in the US and was it occurred to me that we would never, ever have a Mt Rushmore in Australia as we have a totally different system of choosing our leader rather than treating the President like Royalty.
Sarah Palin at the time had been suggested as Vice President material.
I think you can work out the meaning...

Bag for Saint Louise
This is a bag I made for a lovely lady in Australia called Louise - Saint Louise.
It is made from the front part of a pair of recycled denim jeans. I found the image from a wooden carved Madonna in a Czech art book (can't understand a word of it) and so I drew the image, scanned it and converted it into a stitched image. I then painted it with Lumiere paints and went a bit crazy drawing lines out from her 'halo' and then just continued to paint until it was all covered. With some nifty folding I got it into a bag shape and stitched it together.
